Medicago lupulina, commonly known as black medic or black hay, is an annual or perennial herb native to Eurasia and North Africa. It belongs to the legume family and is characterized by small yellow flowers and coiled seed pods. Black medic thrives in a wide range of habitats, including lawns, fields, and disturbed areas. Despite its weedy nature, it has nitrogen-fixing properties, enriching the soil where it grows. While considered a nuisance in some contexts, it can be beneficial as a cover crop or forage for livestock.
