Bunny-tail grass

Lagurus ovatus, commonly known as hare’s-tail grass or bunny-tail grass, is an annual species native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe. It is instantly recognizable by its soft, oval, velvety flower heads that resemble tiny animal tails—an appearance that inspired its colloquial names across many languages. Unlike most wild grasses, Lagurus ovatus produces these dense, silky inflorescences that persist long after flowering, turning pale and fluffy as they mature. Its ability to thrive in dry, sandy coastal soils makes it a characteristic plant of dunes and seaside landscapes, where its distinctive seed heads sway like small, living ornaments in the wind.
