Dark columbine

Aquilegia atrata, commonly known as dark columbine, is a perennial wildflower native to the Alps and other mountainous regions of central Europe. It is distinguished by its unusually dark flowers, which range from deep violet to almost black-purple, giving the plant a dramatic appearance uncommon among columbines. The species name atrata means “clothed in black” or “darkened,” referring to this distinctive coloration. Unlike the brighter blue forms of the common columbine, Aquilegia atrata is especially associated with alpine meadows and limestone slopes, where its elegant, nodding flowers create a striking contrast against the surrounding grassland.
