Brown knapweed
Centaurea jacea, commonly known as brown knapweed, is a perennial wildflower native to Europe. It is distinguished by its ragged, purplish-pink flower heads and narrow, deeply lobed leaves. Its colloquial name “knapweed” comes from the Old English word cnap, meaning “head,” referring to the flower’s knobby, clustered appearance. Unlike many other wildflowers, it can hybridize easily with related species, which has led to the creation of a number of natural hybrids in meadows and grasslands.
