Centaurea scabiosa, commonly known as greater knapweed, is a perennial wildflower native to Europe and western Asia. It is recognized by its large, fringed purple flower heads and stiff, branching stems that can reach impressive heights for a knapweed species. The plant’s name scabiosa refers to its historical use in treating skin conditions, though this is no longer practiced. Unlike many members of its genus, greater knapweed thrives in dry grasslands and calcareous soils, where its nectar-rich blooms are especially important for bumblebees and butterflies, including several declining species that rely on its long-flowering season.
