Hyacinthoides non-scripta, commonly known as the English bluebell, is a perennial woodland wildflower native to western Europe. It is recognized by its deep violet-blue, sweetly scented flowers hanging in a one-sided arch, giving the plant its characteristic graceful curve. The Latin "non-scripta," meaning "unwritten," distinguishes it from a mythical hyacinth said to bear letters on its petals. English bluebells form vast spring carpets in ancient woodlands, flowering early before the tree canopy closes and providing a crucial nectar source for early insects.
