Lythrum salicaria, commonly known as purple loosestrife, is a perennial wetland plant native to Europe and temperate Asia. It grows along riverbanks, ditches, and marsh margins, producing tall dense spikes of vivid magenta-purple flowers from June to August. Its name derives from the Greek lythron, meaning blood, a reference to the color of its blooms. Each plant can produce up to two million seeds annually, making it exceptionally persistent in wet habitats across its range.
