Betonica officinalis, commonly known as betony or wood betony, is a perennial wildflower native to Europe. It is recognized by its wrinkled, scalloped leaves and dense spikes of purple-pink flowers held above the foliage. The species name officinalis indicates that it was officially recognized as a medicinal plant, and few European herbs have a richer reputation in traditional medicine. In medieval times, betony was believed to protect against everything from headaches to evil spirits, leading to the saying, “Sell your coat and buy betony.” Its long-standing cultural importance made it one of the most valued healing plants in monastery gardens and folk traditions across Europe.
