Oxlip

Primula elatior, commonly known as the oxlip, is a perennial wildflower native to central and northern Europe. It is recognized by its soft, pale yellow, nodding flowers arranged in a loose cluster atop a slender stem, emerging early in spring. The species name elatior, meaning “taller,” reflects its more upright stature compared to its close relatives, the primrose and cowslip. Oxlip populations are strongly tied to ancient, undisturbed woodlands, making the plant an indicator of long-standing forest ecosystems. Its early nectar supports queen bumblebees at a critical moment after winter.
